why is it called borderline-a name that can undermine the seriousness of this disorder.

the name borderline came about because at the time of conceptualization of bpd the symptons exhibited were in between the borders of neurosis and psychosis(severe mental disorder where ontact is lost with reality.

the diagnostic and statisical manual of mental disorders,fourth edition 1994 identifies those with bpd as having-

1-frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment

2-a pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation-called splitting

3-identity disturbance markedly and persistently unstable self image or sense of self

4-impulsivity

5-recurrent suicidal behaviour

6-affective instability

7-chronic feelings of emptiness

8-inapropiate,intense anger or difficulty controlling anger(frquent displays of temper which may be verbal or physical

9-transient,stress relatedparanoid ideation or severe dissociative symptons
